A recent survey by SurfAid’s Community Based Health Program staff found that nine out of 10 women in the Mentawai use the services of the local village Traditional Birthing Attendant (TBA) to assist with childbirth.
Nobody works with SurfAid just because it is dangerous. There are dangerous seas around Mentawai and Nias, and there’s always the potential for earthquakes, tsunamis and flooding in our project locations. And while these threats are always present, the risk they pose is long-term, and doesn’t affect the daily lives of our staff.
