SurfAid in the Schools; educating youth
on Malaria and mosquitos

Give the Gift of SurfAid

Pictorial: SurfAid in the Schools & in the Community

Malaria is a huge problem for the people of the Mentawai Islands.  Besides being a cause of death and suffering, it leads to lost economic productivity for adults and it keeps kids out school.  Experts around the world call the intertwined nature of malaria and poverty, the "poverty trap."  SurfAid's Mentawai Community-Based Health Programme is using proven, cost-effective programs to lift the burden of malaria from twenty-two target areas in the Mentawai, as well as address other dangerous issues including malnutrition, sanitation, and access to immunizations.  Check out this pictorial for some action shots from some of our recent work.

Project Brings Reliable Sources of Fresh Water to the Hinakos Islands
As part of our commitment to working with local organizations SurfAid partnered with LEAP/ Yayasan Indo Jiwa on a project to address the lack of reliable fresh water in the Hinakos Islands. Now complete, the project installed 22 water pumps and bores for communities that were hit hard by the March 2005 8.7 earthquake.

The Food Pyramid: Yeah, it matters...
In the Mentawai Islands, food rich in vitamins and nutrients is grown throughout the islands, but for an indigenous resident to have a balanced diet is nearly impossible.  The reason?
Hardly anyone knows what a balanced diet is.

As a result, many children have their development stunted and their immune system repressed from malnutrition and anemia.  Meet Junaidi and learn how SurfAid's programs are addressing this dangerous situation.

Event Recap: Liquid Nation, SurfAid Sydney

La Jolla, CA: Liquid Nation 3. What a party!  For the third year in a row, Santiago & Fernando Aguerre & their lovely wives hosted the party of the year to benefit SurfAid International and other worthy charities.  Kelly, Rob, Taj, Jamie O'Brien, Lisa Andersen, Rusty, and other stars from the surf community came out to show their support. The surf industry and generous individuals came through in the end to the tune of over $200,000 raised for the SIMA Humanitarian fund, a portion of which benefits SurfAid.

SurfAid Sydney Benefit:
Sparkling city lights from Sydney harbor's edge provided the perfect backdrop for the SurfAid Sydney Benefit.  The Gamelan orchestra played by the Scots College  prep school brought silence to the room. We were not sure if the boys' concentration was focused on their gong timing or the keeping up of their Indonesian sarongs…bless.

Wave of Compassion Trip a Success!
The Wave of Compassion II Sweepstakes and surf trip wrapped up with the grand prize winner being Paul Bryan of California!  Paul lives in Santa Barbara and upon hearing the news of his good fortune drove the 4 hours to San Diego to celebrate with the SurfAid crew and fellow trip-maker Will Tant. Paul received an all expense paid boat trip with Brad Gerlach, Will Tant, Dane Ward, and Chris Waring on a surf/cultural expedition to the Mentawai Islands and North Sumatra this October on one of the most impressive surf charter boats in the world, the Indies Trader III.

Special Thanks: Reef, Globe, the Glue Network

Reef:  Reef graciously included SurfAid on their second annual Planet Reef Tour hitting the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Local community members were  given the opportunity to learn about the health conditions of remote indigenous communities in the regions where SurfAid operates, as well as shown how to support the cause.

A BIG thanks to Reef for including us on this awesome road trip, and for giving us the opportunity to spread SurfAid’s success stories to the EAST COAST!

Globe: The crew at Globe Shoes showed their support for SurfAid by allowing us first dibs to hang at the premier of their ubercool film ‘Secret Machine’.  Taking place during the US Open in Huntington Beach, industry insiders showed up en masse and renewed their support to SurfAid with much needed donations.

After the huge success of the films premier in Laguna Beach, Globe turned around and partnered with SurfAid for a premiere showing of the film in San Diego.  The night was a huge success and raised over $4,000. Thank you Globe Shoes, GFH Skateboards, Anarchy eyewear, and others who so generously donated door prizes!

The Glue Network: This is a group to watch.  The Glue Network organized a killer mural to benefit SurfAid and Keep a Breast at the most recent Action Sports Retailers Trade Show in San Diego. Besides being a great show of support in front of 100s  of the most influential people in the surf industry, it's was a great fundraiser too!  Over $6,000 was raised for SurfAid from the mural auction and T-shirt & poster sales (still available!). Visit The Glue Network online at www.thegluenetwork.com.

Lastly, thanks to Mathitis.org  for including us as a beneficiary to their low-key and very successful event at the House of Blues, San Diego.

Interns and Volunteers Get It Done for SurfAid!
10,000 miles away from Indonesia yet still having an impact.

A big thanks goes out to SurfAid USA summer interns, Tim Brown and Shannon Gearing. Both worked tirelessly in our Encinitas office to grow and improve support of SurfAid.  Maybe they learned something too..... This fall we welcome Jessica Calixto, Devon Holloway, and Kaley Swift and already they're demonstrating what we already know; SurfAid attracts talented people that can get the job done!
+ If you live in San Diego and are interested in an internship, please contact us.

In the last few months we had three awesome events hosted by volunteers from New York, Hilo and New Jersey.

Hilo, HI, BIG WAVE SURF MOVIE NIGHT:  Nearly 300 people came out to show support for SurfAid and see a couple great flicks in SurfAid's Wave of Compassion and All Aboard the Crazy Train. Special thanks goes out to the Palace Theater, Hilo Surfboard Company, Orchidland Surf, Sponge and Son, Hawaiian Arts, Bruce at Honoliisurf.com the Pacific Tsunami Museum, Dr. Jack Bunnell, and the fearless organizer, John Moyer.

New Jersey Cares:    Gil Olsen organized a show of support for SurfAid, that if not for 30 mph onshore winds, a consistent downpour of sideways rain and 5 foot slop the event would have been a smash-up success.  Given the conditions the crew did tremendous and is looking forward to going bigger next year.  Our thanks goes out to Gil Olsen, Lauren Curnyn, and photographer Jack Reynolds, and all the local sponsors that helped out.
+ Sign-up now to be a part of the next New Jersey event.

Fire Island, NY: Volunteer organizer Annie Robinson sums it up: "We had a great time raising money for SurfAid & jammin' with the relevation band on a rainy Friday night!  The Fire Island & surf community really came together to pull off an amazing event!! Thank you to all the sponsors and volunteers whose hard work and good karma pulled it all together."
THANK YOU ANNIE!

Sponsors: Relevation Band, Religion Surf Co., Matthew's Seafood House, Pat Stretch @ Fire Island Sales, Kenny Goodman Jewelry, Healing Waters Massage, Fire Island Water Taxi, Bunger Surf Shop.
