Malaria Rates in Two Pilot Villages

SurfAid Pilot Villages Continue to Show Success
Three years ago, on a shoe-string budget SurfAid pioneered a cutting-edge, sustainable malaria control program in two villages in the Mentawai Islands where malaria was endemic (always present).  Last year, tests showed malaria had been reduced by 75% and this year, being our three year measurement, malaria reduction is at 90%!

The original goal was to reduce malaria by 50% within five years, a figure based on World Health Organization (WHO) benchmarks for similar malaria control projects.  With our latest measurements it appears SurfAid's programs are not only succeeding but are far ahead of international standards.

With the Malaria Control Project in full swing and poised for expansion into the Malaria Free Mentawai Project, SurfAid is broadening the scope of disease control in the current target villages.

By strategically expanding our programs at this time, we're building on the momentum started by the original Mentawai health projects without compromising any resources, allowing these programs to finish strong in the next 3 years, and at the same time address other preventable causes of death and suffering.

SurfAid extends a very big thank you to all of our Surf Travel supporters, including our very latest, Sumatran Surf Adventures
, who run the charter boat, TENGIRRI, in the Mentawais and the land camp at Asu in the Hinakos Islands.

Anthony, from SSA, shares a little wisdom:

"Through our travels throughout the islands of North Sumatra and following the tsunami and earthquake we have seen firsthand the great work SurfAid does. SSA and our guests are always very grateful to have the opportunity to surf, fish and have fun in the Mentawais but we also know that the people living in these places need our help. After seeing the way SurfAid operates we feel that becoming a SurfAid sponsor is the best way to do this."

Sydney Benefit Celebrates SurfAid's Work; Raises Funds
Sparkling city lights from Sydney harbour's edge provided the perfect backdrop for the SurfAid Sydney Benefit.

The Gamelan orchestra played by the Scots College prep school brought silence to the room. We were not sure if the boys' concentration was focused on their gong timing or the keeping up of their Indonesian sarongs…bless.
