After the Disasters: How one community is rebuilding

The famous right-hander.

"Sorake Beach Care Club."
Community ownership of projects is essential for successful community development.  Like everything it must be practiced before it becomes second-nature.

When surfers think of Nias, the first thing that comes to mind is the amazing right-hander of Lagundri Bay, first introduced to the global surf community in the 1970s.  It's at this very location that the people of Sorake Beach are rebuilding their community after being hit with two massive earthquakes and a devastating Tsunami in the past year.  With SurfAid's guidance, a newly formed volunteer group, the Sorake Beach Care Club, is hoping for a more robust and better-run community when the three phases of the project are finished. Time may show that the biggest value lies in the lessons learned in the process; lessons that are instrumental in the successful completion of any community-based initiative, including the fight against malaria and other preventable diseases.  Read the whole story.

SurfAid & the UN Millennium Goals
When it comes to humanitarian work, it's important that organizations do not operate in a 'vacuum.' The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) form a blueprint for meeting the needs of the world's poor agreed to by a majority of countries and leading development institutions.  We thought you'd like to know that SurfAid is fully supportive of these goals as demonstrated by the direct and practical assistance we're bringing to the people of Western Sumatra.
Come see what we mean.

"WAVE OF COMPASSION" film nominated for X-DANCE, Wins!
SurfAid's hour-long action documentary chronicling the surf industry's efforts to help improve the health of the Mentawai islanders was nominated for three X-Dance Film Festival awards, Best Story, Best Documentary and Best Original Score, winning Best Original Score.  In addition, the SurfAid PSA was nominated in the shorts category.  X-DANCE was held January 20th - 24th during the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.  If you haven't yet seen "Wave of Compassion" we highly encourage you to buy the DVD and share it with friends.

Recommended Reading: Malaria Control Program
Malaria is rampant in the Mentawai. A number of studies have described the Mentawai Islands as a hyper-endemic malaria area with up to 50% of people carrying the parasite at any one time. It is responsible for many deaths and extensive suffering. It keeps communities in the poverty trap and severely reduces a child’s capacity to be educated.  Keep Reading....

In the News: Dutch courage and a make-do medico save Perth surfer
From the The Sunday Times, Australia
"Mr Plummer's only knowledge of medicine comes from what he was told by a doctor from SurfAid International. The award-winning non-profit group involves the international surfing community striving to improve the health of locals in surfing regions around the world, including the Mentawais."
Read the entire article (but remember a carton of Bintang and medical procedures DO NOT normally go well together).
