After the Disasters: How one community is rebuilding
|

The famous right-hander.
|
|

"Sorake Beach Care Club."
Community ownership of projects is essential for successful community development. Like everything it must be practiced before it becomes second-nature.
|
When surfers think of Nias, the first thing that comes to mind is the amazing right-hander of Lagundri Bay, first introduced to the global surf community in the 1970s. It's at this very location that the people of Sorake Beach are rebuilding their community after being hit with two massive earthquakes and a devastating Tsunami in the past year. With SurfAid's guidance, a newly formed volunteer group, the Sorake Beach Care Club, is hoping for a more robust and better-run community when the three phases of the project are finished. Time may show that the biggest value lies in the lessons learned in the process; lessons that are instrumental in the successful completion of any community-based initiative, including the fight against malaria and other preventable diseases. Read the whole story.
SurfAid & the UN Millennium Goals
When it comes to humanitarian work, it's important that organizations do not operate in a 'vacuum.' The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) form a blueprint for meeting the needs of the world's poor agreed to by a majority of countries and leading development institutions. We thought you'd like to know that SurfAid is fully supportive of these goals as demonstrated by the direct and practical assistance we're bringing to the people of Western Sumatra.
Come see what we mean.
Recommended Reading: Malaria Control Program
Malaria is rampant in the Mentawai. A number of studies have described the Mentawai Islands as a hyper-endemic malaria area with up to 50% of people carrying the parasite at any one time. It is responsible for many deaths and extensive suffering. It keeps communities in the poverty trap and severely reduces a child’s capacity to be educated. Keep Reading....
In the News: Dutch courage and a make-do medico save Perth surfer
From the The Sunday Times, Australia
"Mr Plummer's only knowledge of medicine comes from what he was told by a doctor from SurfAid International. The award-winning non-profit group involves the international surfing community striving to improve the health of locals in surfing regions around the world, including the Mentawais."

The V Files – Sydney SurfAid volunteers get to work….
|

“I never knew I was left handed until now” - Justin
|
When Justin Bean and Jacob Maquire emailed the Sydney office wanting to assist they never realised that having spent the last few months in Encinitas in California, they had been just a stones throw from the USA office!!! If only they knew…
|

“Hello, I would just like to enquire about working in the Encinitas office.”
- Jacob
|
Keen to help and eager to get involved with SurfAid, the two 19 yrs old from Florida got the Aussie low-down and set to work immediately. While Justin focused on updating our database with new supporters, Jacob re-vamped the volunteer package and worked on translating the community health posters for the field. Both have committed to several volunteer days over the next month. Cheers mate!
Ryan Achurch is set for success in the world of HR and has kindly volunteered himself to SurfAid every Friday this month. The Australian Employee Handbook, Volunteer Contracts and Employee Contracts are all under review as he makes sure that they included all necessary NSW and Federal Legislation. Ryan is already hands on working with adults at the Spastic Centre. Thanks for helping out SurfAid Ryan – great to have you here!
Suzana Cigoja continues to work tirelessly on Kaimana set to get Australians into party mode and raise awareness/funds while Carlie Thornton got into the spirit of SurfAid in Byron Bay earlier this month – selling wristbands and raising awareness! As usual Sigrid Langker, Milton Brown and Nathan Macallum and new volunteer Brad Skellern have been giving their best to ASMF – thanks for flying the flag guys!

The United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) has around 2500 pupils and is renowned for being a school with a humanitarian conscience. This year, the college has devoted their yearly fundraising event to SurfAid and it’s planned for March 16th and 17th. Students will swim in teams for 24hrs in an attempt to raise approximately $10,000 for the wells and latrines project in the islands where SurfAid works. There will also be wristbands for sale, sausage sizzles and loads of fun. Thanks UWCSEA students and staff – great support!
IMPORTANT STUFF!!!
Stacer Boats Equips SurfAid
Special thanks goes out to Stacer Boats for equipping SurfAid with 2 new speed boats!

Australia’s Surfing Life Magazine – immense support!
Get this for support - Last year ASL auctioned off a signed and framed pair of boardshorts from Kelly Slater, Tom Carroll, Mick Fanning, Andy Irons and Mark Occhilupo for $10,000 and all proceeds went to SurfAid!
As if that wasn’t enough, they also produced ASL and SurfAid co-branded wrist bands that were cover-mounted onto the magazine. A certain percentage from each cover sale was donated to SurfAid which ended up totalling close to $5000!!! ASL – we appreciate your support immensely and look forward to working together on more unique fundraising ideas.
Have you checked out ASL recently? Grab an issue from your local newsy or head to http://www.surfinglife.net/
