SurfAid Receives 2nd Humanitarian Honor in 4 Months
In recognition of the capability and potential of our small but heavy-hitting nonprofit, SurfAid International was invited to attend the TIME Global Health Summit in New York.  Perhaps the most prestigious and knowledgeable gathering ever of health professionals and world leaders, the goal of the conference was to discuss major health problems facing the developing world and share ideas for overcoming these deadly issues.

"Notes from the Field" Highlights a Common Problem with Grave Consequences.
Eight-month-old Silvie was born in Toloulaggo, South Siberut in February this year. She’s
the seventh child to be born to her parents, Samuel and Rosina. She is also a great cause
of concern to them. Over the past few months Silvie’s growth has tailed off...

Community: Meet a Few Members of the SurfAid Community Making a Difference.
Creating lasting change in the health of our target communities is a daunting task considering the diseases we're facing, the isolation of these locations, and the centuries of behaviour that must be overcome, all balanced with the need and desire to be culturally-sensitive.  Every so often we receive a note of gratitude from our supporters that inspire us to continue doing our best.  Hopefully, after reading these letters you'll feel the same inspiration for continuing your support of the cause.

Riding High: Retail Partners You Should Shop With.
Aside from the huge undertaking of creating lasting improvements in health, two challenging aspects of running our grassroots nonprofit are getting the word out and fundraising.  SurfAid's retail partners do both by giving potential supporters a way to learn more about the cause and contribute on the spot to SurfAid.  It's a vital role and SurfAid is very thankful to have retail partners as part of our community. Take a look at which shops in your area are retail partners of SurfAid.

WITH BELLS ON!!!!! SurfAid Fundraiser at Bells Beach, VIC Australia
We were thrilled when Kerri and Mark from "Bells Beach Cottages" gave SurfAid a call earlier this year to tell us that they were having a fundraiser party. And what a party - with well over 120 people in attendance!

SurfAid's Emily Laurence spreading the word at ASMF Take 4

ASMF Take 4
The premier of the Australian Surf Movie Festival kicked off on the 23rd of November with over 300 people present to watch Tim Bonython’s latest creation, “Horrorscopes” and get a peak at the SurfAid promotional DVD. Held at Bondi Open Air Cinema, the ASMF showed its support to SurfAid through extensive promotional material and allowing SurfAid to exhibit on the evening. Sydney volunteers pitched in by selling t-shirts, wristbands, stickers and supplying information to interested donors. The evening raised close to $1000 and allowed us to spread the word about SurfAid's work.  Many thanks to Tim Bonython and ASMF Take 4 who will be touring with the SurfAid promotional DVD around Australia.
Check out the SurfAid website for show dates!

BRAVE NEW WAVES
Mother Art Gallery, Byron Bay will show the work of ten surf artists on the 7th of January 2006 whose creations are inspired by the beauty and constant change of the ocean.  The Brave News Waves Exhibition will be donating 10% of total sales directly to SurfAid International Australia. BRAVE NEW WAVES features canvas works that represent the coastal environment and the culture that it feeds on. Mother Art has gained a reputation as an artistic leader in Byron Bay and in wider Australia with all exhibited works produced in house and available for sale in limited edition runs. Check out www.motherart.com.au  to get a glimpse of some of the great artists who will be exhibiting that evening!

Special Thanks…
2005 has been a big year for SurfAid International and the Australian office has been backed by a few particularly inspirational supporters. Many thanks to Kim Sundell and Mal Jago (CoastalWatch) for providing office space and administrative resources, FCS/ SurfHardware for their dedication in distributing the SurfAid wristbands and Australian Surf Business magazine (ASB) for immense support with wristband promotion and advertising.

To all our friends and supporters - have a safe and happy holiday. We look forward to working with you in 2006.

Volunteer Progress!
Only weeks ago we held the official SurfAid Australia media launch on the shores of Sydney Harbour. But there are a few people who have been behind the scenes supporting SurfAid Australia from the very beginning……

  • MILTON BROWN – HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER/MUSICIAN
Milton is a teacher at Barrenjoey High on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, a ripper surfer and a great musician. Somewhere in all this, Milton has given his time to volunteering for SurfAid Australia by organising schools surfing competition fundraisers, creating SurfAid surf tourism lesson plans for our schools program and playing the guitar soundtrack to the schools DVD. Milton has also generously housed SurfAid t-shirts, stickers and information while SurfAid set up the Sydney office!
  • JUSTIN WALLACE
After a 4-year hiatus at The Surfer’s Path magazine in the USA and living with the co-founder of SurfAid International Andrew Griffith, Justin returned to start sales in Sydney for Creatures of Leisure & Otis. Justin has tracked the SurfAid story and volunteered where possible helping SurfAid establish partnerships for editorial content and advertising space in surf magazines. Justin photographed for the SurfAid media launch in Sydney on the 8th of November and is currently playing with new advertising material for SurfAid.
  • And welcome to our new volunteers…..
Sydney has a couple of new volunteers: Sigrid Langker and Nathan McCallum ! Sigrid is a Bondi local and Nathan is from the Northern beaches. Both are helping SurfAid Australia at events like ASMF Take 4 and with any administrative tasks that come up! Welcome to SurfAid and thanks for joining us!
