Australia Affiliate

SurfAid was incorporated in Australia in October 2004 as a result of increasing public, private and government support received in the preceding years.   As Indonesia's largest Western neighbour, Australia will always be interested in the health and welfare of this developing nation and many Australians are fortunate to visit the remote, pristine surfing locations in SurfAid's target areas.

Australian professional surfers have been supporting SurfAid since 2001.  With their help, we enjoy a huge following and far-reaching awareness among the Australian surfing public.  Australian surfers who have contributed both financially and with awareness campaigns include:

  • Mark Occhilupo
  • Luke Eagan
  • Mark Richards
  • Tom Carroll
  • Kate Skarrett
  • Barton Lynch
  • Martin Potter
  • Dave Rastovich

This support reached new levels following the Boxing Day Tsunami on 26 Dec 04, when Australian corporate donors Billabong and Quiksilver made it possible for SurfAid to respond to the emergency.  See full details in the Tsunami Response section.

SurfAid Australia is established with an office in North Sydney. The office is staffed full-time through a key relationship formed with a major sponsor - Coastalwatch.

Health & Development Programmes

SurfAid Australia Programme Inputs

The Australian affiliate has a direct link into the methodology, design, implementation and management of all SurfAid development programmes.  All programmes are submitted to the Programme Review Team which consists of core SurfAid members, key Australian experts and organizations, which are engaged depending on the nature of the programme.  The review process includes review of project documentation and seeks inputs from the assembled panel to ensure the project is appropriate and adequately resourced.

Following approval by the Programme Review Team, the Australian Board of Directors sign off is required.  Once completed, SurfAid Australia's Chairman submits the approved programme to the International Board of Directors (consisting of representation from each affiliate).

TSUNAMI RESPONSE

Following the tragic tsunami of 26 Dec 2004, immediate corporate support from Australian donors Quiksilver and Billabong enabled SurfAid to respond to the emergency.  SurfAid Australia contracted SurfAid New Zealand, who were already operating in Indonesia, to deliver specific aid to the stricken areas within reach.  As funding flowed in from the Australian public and AusAID (Australian Agency for International Development), SurfAid Australia was able to extend its emergency coverage and deliver aid to northern islands including Simeuleu and Aceh.

SurfAid International Australia Ltd provided the backbone of our Emergency Tsunami Response in terms of project initiation, management and control. This included the provision of human resources, expertise and funding, obtained from AusAID, the Australian corporate sector and the Australian public.

"I'm incredibly impressed by SurfAid's efforts post tsunami and post the recent earthquake in Nias."     - Lisa Roberts, AusAID Emergency Coordinator
